Manifest:

Yayoi Kusama

Manifest invite viewers to learn

and experience Yayoi Kusama’s psychologically charged universe. Where, strategically drilled holes in the frame allows the soft stuffed phalluses to escape. In hope that it would

attract viewers to touch the stuffed phalluses and learn more about her through the write-up.

Manifest has been showcased in both  Temasek Polytechnic, School of Design Open House 16'/17' and Library@Orchard.

Type: Textile Design

Context
Kusama’s personal obsessions, fears and desires were often explored in her highly interactive works. They act as an platform for Kusama to share her personal experiences. In an interview, Kusama mentioned that phalluses(a image of the male reproductive organ) were an object of her fear.

Interactive
In Yayoi Kusama’s Innity Mirror Room— Phalli’s Field allows visitors walk barefooted among the thousand protuberance. In like manner, Manifest presents Kusama’s fear in the form of stuffed phalluses to anyone who dares to touch. Of which, it provides an interactive element to the 3D poster.

Form
In an attempt to showcase the wide range of mediums utilised in Kusama’s art. Menifest is created in

a way that it’s an artwork that showcases an installation.

Mirror
To create the illusion of which

the viewer is submerged in the world

of poka-dots a mirror was utilised

in the 3D poster.

Holes
The circular openings in the frame represents the extensive control Kusama has over her works. Instead of having the box exposed where viewers could touch all the items.

The holes in the frame ‘controls’ the amount of phalluses that are let out

of the frame.
